Safe Sitter®

Registered Safe Sitter Teaching Site
Oahu CPR Training is now a Registered Safe Sitter® Teaching Site, offering a comprehensive babysitting training course for adolescents age 11 to 13.

This nationally-recognized program was developed by Indianapolis pediatrician Dr. Patricia Keener after a colleague’s toddler choked to death while in the care of an adult sitter who didn’t know how to provide first aid. Safe Sitter® is a well-rounded youth development program with a medical basis that aims to reduce the number of avoidable and unintentional deaths among children being cared for by young teen babysitters. The program follows American Heart Association standards for rescue skills as well as instruction in first aid techniques from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Students who complete the Safe Sitter® program gain confidence and learn how, why and where injuries can happen so they can be prevented. The course also covers infant and child choking rescue and CPR, and trains participants to care for a child based on their age, prevent problem behavior, run their own babysitting business and discusses issues of cellphone and online safety.

To graduate from the Safe Sitter® course and receive a completion card, students must pass a rigorous practical and written test that indicates their mastery of key concepts and life and safety skills. Graduates are able to handle emergencies when caring for younger children and are equally equipped with the tools needed to safely stay home alone. Over 600,000 graduates have completed the course in hundreds of cities across the country.

Is your child starting to ask to stay home alone while you run errands? Do you want your daughter to occasionally watch her younger siblings for a few hours? Are your neighbors asking when your son can babysit for them? Then maybe it’s time for Safe Sitter®

There is no magic number for parents to use to determine when is the right time to let their young adolescents go without adult supervision and begin to babysit. But there is a program that will prepare them!

Safe Sitter® was founded by pediatrician Patricia A. Keener, M.D. Our Medical Director Sara Ross, M.D., is also a pediatrician. So we know kids! We know and respect the developmental realities of young adolescents. We can take the most recent and reliable scientific knowledge and put it together in a way that kids can understand.

We don’t overwhelm them with data. We empower them with wisdom. We foster success. Our entire not-for-profit organization is solely focused on the Safe Sitter® program and we take great pride in making it a positive experience for each and every child.

At Safe Sitter® students learn how to:

  1. BulletRescue a choking child or infant plus ways to prevent choking in the first place.

  2. Perform infant and child CPR. (Taught in most classes.)

  3. Evaluate an injury to determine how to handle it including how to get help.

  4. Prevent problem behavior plus how to manage problem behavior situations.

  5. BulletKeep themselves safe in threatening situations from power failures to prowlers.

  6. BulletCare for a child’s basic needs including feeding, entertaining, and toileting.

  7. BulletEstablish their own babysitting business.

The class culminates in a ceremony where parents come to celebrate all the students have learned. And to learn their role as the parent of a child who has just taken a huge step towards self-reliance. Students leave a Safe Sitter® class confident of their new skills. Parents leave the ceremony proud and reassured.

You’ll have fun. You’ll learn a lot in a short period of time. And at the end you can proudly say, “I am a Safe Sitter®!”

Courses will be offered at various times throughout the year. To meet the needs of everyone, we will try to offer the Safe Sitter® program in the following various course types throughout the year:

  1. BulletSafe Sitter® Basic is a 6 ½-hour (1 Day) essential curriculum designed for busy schedules.

  2. BulletSafe Sitter® with CPR is a 6 ½-hour (1 Day) curriculum designed to include teaching CPR in a one day course.

  3. BulletSafe Sitter® is a 12-hour (2 Days) curriculum designed for comprehensive coverage including infant and child CPR.
